The Board of Trustees (BOT) recently approved an update to the S-Anon/S-Ateen Service Manual (SSSM) to bring its language regarding Area Delegates into alignment with the World Service Conference (WSC) Charter.
The WSC Charter states that Area Delegates or Alternate Area Delegates must be “elected by the Area or selected by the Area and registered with the North America World Service Office.”
It recently came to the attention of the Policy & Service Communications Committee that the SSSM contained language that conflicted with this requirement. Specifically, the SSSM stated that an individual attending the WSC from an Area without an Delegate could potentially be authorized to serve as that Area’s Delegate:
“…and if there is no other Delegate from your Area, you may be authorized to serve in that capacity.”
In August, the BOT approved a motion to remove this language from the SSSM. The motion noted that the WSC has not allowed self-appointed members to serve as Area Delegates in many years and that removing the outdated language would reduce confusion and ensure the SSSM accurately reflects the WSC Charter.
This change does not establish a new policy for Area Delegates; it removes conflicting language from the SSSM so that S-Anon’s service materials are consistent with the requirements already established in the WSC Charter.
