The Area Delegates are an important part of the traditional S-Anon service structure. Concept One of the S-Anon Twelve Concepts of Service states: “The ultimate responsibility and authority for S-Anon world services belongs to the S-Anon groups.” This service structure is often referred to as an inverted pyramid, with the groups at the top, providing direction to our trusted servants beyond the group level.
One role of an Area Delegate (AD) is to attend the annual World Service Conference (WSC) and represent their area with a voice and a vote. 10 ADs attended the July 2025 WSC in Dallas, held prior to the international conventions for S-Anon and S-Ateen. Here’s a summary to provide a perspective of group participation in this level of our service structure. There are currently 14 active ADs for the 66 areas in the United States and Canada that can be represented. The areas that currently have an Area Delegate are Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Online Platform Groups, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Ontario. This amounts to only a 21% representation proportion of the currently defined areas, which are made up of: 1 AD for each of the 50 states, (except California, which has 1 Northern California and 1 Southern California Area), 1 AD for each of the 13 Canadian provinces, 1 for Phone Groups, and 1 for Online Platform Groups.
Does your area have an AD? If not, your voice was not heard at this year’s WSC, where we discussed and voted on two important motions, both of which affect S-Anon as a whole. The deadline for an AD to be selected by their area and register with the World Service Office to attend the next WSC in July 2026 is May 1, 2026.
If you are willing to represent your area, please check out the resources listed below. Monthly AD video meetings are held on the third Sunday of each month at 5:00 p.m. ET. These AD meetings are optional; however, connecting with other ADs and taking information from the AD meetings back to your area’s groups are also important parts of carrying the message of S-Anon. Below are some valuable links to help you better understand the role of an AD.
