Dear Fellow S-Anon Members,
I am so grateful for my recovery journey in S-Anon. I was shattered when I learned of the addiction. Thankfully, my Higher Power was with me, even before He became the God of my understanding. Looking back, there is no other explanation for the grace given to me in my first few meetings.
I sat close to the meeting door at first, ready to bolt as soon as it ended. Once the shock of revelation started to abate, I was finally able to look around the room and see people who were able to laugh AND be serious as they worked the S-Anon program. I experienced compassion and felt embraced as a newcomer. I wanted what they so freely shared: a sense of safety and calmness, and their experience, strength, and hope. My S-Anon toolbox has expanded with each shared story.
Service work is how I took baby steps to help me feel more invested in my home group, first helping to set up the meeting room and progressing to other roles such as group secretary, treasurer, and newcomer greeter. I first became aware of a larger S-Anon community while attending a recovery event. My Higher Power gifted me with an enthusiasm for growth, which led me to participate in this larger service structure in many different roles beyond the group level. That service, in turn, led me to grow in my personal recovery and in my compassion for those still suffering.
My service work as an Area Delegate and on the Board of Trustees greatly changed how I see S-Anon. Not only does it take people, it also takes money to provide services to our fellowship. I had not previously understood the ever-increasing scope of work and associated costs needed to support and grow the S-Anon path to recovery. If you’ve found support and comfort and want it to continue for your own health as well as for others suffering from the effects of another’s sex addiction, please consider a special contribution during this Seventh Tradition Special Appeal.
