The first part of our S-Anon recovery journey is finding out that we are not alone. We discover there is a place to talk to others who have our same problems, and to be listened to by those who understand—as only someone who shares those same problems can. We begin to share our innermost feelings and the shame we have felt begins to disappear.
This is true for us. This is true for S-Ateen members!
Growing up in a sexaholic home may influence an individual’s future life choices, including the choice of a partner. Unless our young family members are able to identify and address the unhealthy beliefs and behaviors they have adopted as a means to survive living with the family disease of sexaholism, they may repeat the same cycle that brought us to S-Anon.
What can you do to help? You can practice Step Twelve by carrying S-Ateen’s message of hope to those who need it. Service as an S-Ateen Group Sponsor is a great way to do that.
The requirements for serving are simple. All it takes is willingness and satisfaction of a few simple requirements. S-Ateen Group Sponsors:
-Have been S-Anon members for at least two years;
-Have completed the S-Anon Twelve Steps, or are working the Steps, with an S-Anon sponsor;
-Regularly attend S-Anon meetings;
-Are 21+ years old;
-Have no felony convictions;
-Have not been charged with child abuse or any inappropriate sexual behavior, or convicted of any offense involving sexual misconduct or physical violence against children or adults.
S-Ateen meetings are conducted in person at local and regional S-Anon events and at S-Anon/S-Ateen International Conventions, and online weekly via video conference. Two certified S-Ateen Group Sponsors attend every meeting.
Those of us who have been in the program for a while know that there is no greater joy than working one-on-one with a newcomer in recovery. Working with S-Ateen members can multiply that joy times ten! S-Ateen members enter the program feeling uncertain and afraid. With time and by using the tools of the S-Ateen program, they literally blossom before our eyes.
If you are interested in learning more about how to get involved in this very fulfilling service work, please email S-Ateen@sanon.org. The S-Ateen Committee offers training and support for all incoming S-Ateen Group Sponsors. The service commitment is typically one online meeting a month—one hour. We receive so much more in return!
Make a difference. This service can change your life, while offering a young person affected by the family disease of sexaholism the tools they can use to change their lives.
